‘Pwyll, Prince of Dyved’

‘Pwyll, Prince of Dyved’ is a medieval tale from the Mabinogion. Of European significance, the Mabinogion is a collection of early Welsh tales in the medieval Romance tradition. Originally an oral corpus, the collection was first transcribed in the early fourteenth century and survives in two primary manuscripts, the White Book of Rhydderch (c.1325) and the Red Book of Hergest (c.1400). ‘Pwyll’ appears in the first of the Four Branches of the Mabinogi. It was first translated into English in 1838 by Lady Charlotte Guest, whose translation we have followed in this edition.

The story is set in the magical kingdom of Annwvyn and recounts the tale of Pwyll's partly-supernatural odyssey as he fights his adversaries and wins the hand of the beautiful Rhiannon.

This edition has been limited to 140 copies. The text was handset by Kenneth Burnley and David Paddy in 12 point Monotype Baskerville and printed on Magnani Mould paper, on a nineteenth-century Franklin platen press. The eight linocut illustrations are by Peter Welford, with each copy signed by the artist. The binding was designed and hand-bound by Judy Corbett in green quarter leather, with accompanying slipcase.

Price: £340.00 (plus £7.50 p&p inland UK)
